a mother's prayer

how amazing is this?
I love Tina Fey- this is hysterical and oh so true....

A Mother’s Prayer for Her Child By Tina Fey

“First, Lord: No tattoos. May neither Chinese symbol for truth nor Winnie-the-Pooh holding the FSU logo stain her tender haunches.May she be Beautiful but not Damaged, for it’s the Damage that draws the creepy soccer coach’s eye, not the Beauty. When the Crystal Meth is offered, may she remember the parents who cut her grapes in half And stick with Beer.

Guide her, protect her when crossing the street, stepping onto boats, swimming in the ocean, swimming in pools, walking near pools, standing on the subway platform, crossing 86th Street, stepping off of boats, using mall restrooms, getting on and off escalators, driving on country roads while arguing, leaning on large windows, walking in parking lots, riding Ferris wheels, roller-coasters, log flumes, or anything called “Hell Drop,” “Tower of Torture,” or “The Death Spiral Rock ‘N Zero G Roll featuring Aerosmith,” and standing on any kind of balcony ever, anywhere, at any age.Lead her away from Acting but not all the way to Finance. Something where she can make her own hours but still feel intellectually fulfilled and get outside sometimes And not have to wear high heels. What would that be, Lord? Architecture? Midwifery? Golf course design? I’m asking You, because if I knew, I’d be doing it, Youdammit.

May she play the Drums to the fiery rhythm of her Own Heart with the sinewy strength of her Own Arms, so she need Not Lie With Drummers.Grant her a Rough Patch from twelve to seventeen. Let her draw horses and be interested in Barbies for much too long, For childhood is short – a Tiger Flower blooming Magenta for one day – And adulthood is long and dry-humping in cars will wait.

O Lord, break the Internet forever, that she may be spared the misspelled invective of her peers And the online marketing campaign for Rape Hostel V: Girls Just Wanna Get Stabbed. And when she one day turns on me and calls me a Bitch in front of Hollister, Give me the strength, Lord, to yank her directly into a cab in front of her friends, For I will not have that Shit. I will not have it.

And should she choose to be a Mother one day, be my eyes, Lord, that I may see her, lying on a blanket on the floor at 4:50 A.M., all-at-once exhausted, bored, and in love with the little creature whose poop is leaking up its back. “My mother did this for me once,” she will realize as she cleans feces off her baby’s neck. “My mother did this for me.” And the delayed gratitude will wash over her as it does each generation and she will make a Mental Note to call me. And she will forget. But I’ll know, because I peeped it with Your God eyes.

Amen.”

artifact uprising

I love making photo books, it's a great gift idea and a perfect way to publish your precious moments. Oliver has really taken a liking to the ones I've made thus far, so if you have little ones I suggest making an extra book for them to look through without worrying about bent pages, rips or sticky fingers. It's a great tool for them to learn about familiar faces that maybe you don't get to see as often as you want to.

You've probably heard about Shutterfly, Blurb or the host of other companies offering photo books
but if you haven't already check out artifact uprising

They offer both soft and hard cover books in several sizes,
as well as instagram friendly books and other photo related products...
the difference is in the process, artifact uprising only uses 100 % recycled pages, learn more here

I've yet to make a book with them but they are certainly on my to do list!

wisdom

I'd say this lady looks like she knows what she's talking about...

"Don’t tell me what to do, and I won’t tell you what to do. That’s my motto. I have a lot of feelings about the decisions of my family members, but I don’t ever offer my opinion unless I’m asked. And that’s why I’m still invited to parties."

most popular birthday

As it turns out,  Sept 16 is the most common birthday in the US.
Based on Harvard University research of birth records in the United States between 1973 and 1999, September 16 is ranked 1st with the most number of births on this day.
Guess there are lots of holiday celebrations to thank for that!

#1000thanks

At this stage in my life it seems that illness, disease and hardships are more prevalent
and real then ever before. Not just people I kind of know or friends of friends but my people, my family and friends. Life is short, life is precious and sometimes I forget to make the most of it.
Sometimes I forget to really enjoy it and count my blessings. So I'm going to start and make a real conscience effort to celebrate a little everyday. I'm starting a #1000thanks page but you can find the hash tag on instagram to see other IG'ers add gratitude, grace and thanks to their lives as well.

Here we go!

Yesterday Oliver told me he was going to teach Georgie how to talk poopy talk (it's an ongoing battle we have with him to stop talking about poop and referring to people and things as poopy, etc) so before I could get him in trouble he quickly took a new position and said he was going to teach Georgie to go on the potty instead. But not yet because she was still a baby and she would be afraid. Maybe when she is 20 he could teach her. *Twenty is the go to age for him whenever we talk about things he will do when he gets older. School, work, driving all happen when he is 20 and apparently the same rules apply to his sister!

so today I am thankful for this boy, how wickedly smart he is
and his plans to teach his sister how to go potty when she's 20!
#1000thanks

where beauty abounds

Although I'm not looking forward to another long winter
and autumn is most certainly the precursor to it...
fall skies are kind amazing, no?

juicing- beet root edition

my juice of choice lately has been a variety of beet root recipes.
First because my local CSA (community shared agriculture) basket has been stocked with them weekly. Secondly because of the host of nutritional benefits found in them
and finally because they are so delicious!

1-2 small beet root
1 pear
1 gala apple
3 carrots
handful of strawberries
1-2 oranges

The best part of juicing is you can really play to your own taste buds.
This recipes makes enough for approx 4 servings- A glass for me and the hubs, half a sippy cup each for the kiddos (I add water to theirs as well).

time to unplug?

ironically i seen the link to this article on facebook
and while I don't necessarily think you need to go to this extreme to revise your lifestyle....
it does raise some excellent points. Especially since having kids,
they basically show you your every miss step in a big way.
So you know when your 16 month old's top 5 words include ipad, it's time to unplug.
A little at least, maybe starting with an hour or two at night. Maybe set times on the weekend.
Not sure I'm ready or want to go back to 1986 (or more appropriately 1982) but taking things back to a more organic time does seem nice. Plus I would rather my kids have memories of me interacting with them rather than watching some device.
